Lesson Three
Waterbending
"The legends say the moon was the first Waterbender. Our ancestors saw how it pushed and pulled the tides and learned how to do it themselves... Our strength comes from the Spirit of the Moon; our life comes from the Spirit of the Ocean. They work together to keep balance." – Princess Yue
Water is the element of change, evolution and prosperity. It allows a person to control water and its various states. Waterbending is being practised in the Water Tribes; every tribe has its own technique of Waterbending.
The original Waterbender is the Moon (the Spirit Tui). The first Waterbenders learnt the skill by watching how it pushed and pulled the water, and even now, Waterbending is based on the push and pull technique. Waterbenders are the only people who didn’t learn their bending from an animal. Tui (Moon) and La (Ocean) are two of the eldest Spirits, they decided to become mortal, and by that, they moved to this world in the form of two Koifish. The two Spirits represent a never ending cycle, black and white, yin and yang, good and bad.

There are several types of Waterbending, and they are:
Waterbending, Snow and Icebending, Plantbending, Bloodbending and Healing.
Every waterbender can bend any fluid, but they're more sucessful bending some fluids than they're with others, for example, there are masters who can bend water plants, and what not, but cannot heal, or bloodbend. For now, it is known that only Master Katara succeeded at every single type of bending.

Icebending:
Bending ice as water is a very Earthbending-like style of bending. You have to have good and strong stands, and be very direct and agressive. Waterbenders can bend ice, because it is frozen water, but even some very skilled Airbenders can move ice and snow, because they both have a lot of air inside.
Plantbending:
Plantbending is the ability to control the water inside a plant. For example, the Waterbenders from the Swamp use this technique to control wines. Taking water from plants and drying them out to get pure water is also considered Plantbending. Some Earthbenders can move plants, because they have minerals from the Earth inside them, but that is very hard and complex.
Bloodbending:
Bloodbending allows someone to control the water inside a living being - an animal or even human. It allows you to move blood in someone’s body. Once this technique is mastered, you can have full control over something – or – someone. This art is illegal and prohibited. You can only perform this technique while the Moon is full. It is extremely dangerous and dreadful.
Healing:
Healing is one of the handiest techniques of Waterbending, and being able to heal, means being able to use water’s healing properties on organisms (human, plant or animal) that are primarily composed of it. It is a technique that requires attention, patience and great bending discipline. Healers are able to heal by redirecting energy paths (chi) through the body.
Weaknesses of Waterbenders:
Since the Moon and the Ocean decided to cross to the mortal world, they became koifish and wanted to teach the world humility. If the Moon or Ocean died, the Waterbenders would cease to exist, well, they wouldn’t die, but they would lose their powers permanently.
During a full Lunar eclipse Waterbenders lose the ability to Waterbend completely, because their power comes from the Moon and their life comes from the Ocean!
In the video below you can see two masters of Waterbending, Master Katara, and Master Hama

The last Avatar who came from the Watertribes was Avatar Kuruk!
Avatar Kuruk was born in the Northern Water Tribe. He was the Avatar after Yangchen, and the Avatar before Kyoshi. He was well known for his ‘Go with the flow’ attitude with his position. But all that changed when a spirit – Koh aka the Face Stealer took a face of someone he loved.
